he Bassey Andah Institute for African and Asian Studies is a one-stop academic institution approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar, Calabar, Nigeria to undertake innovative teaching, researches in socio-cultural, anthropological studies and emerging economies as well as to promote exchange of cultural activities between Nigeria and South-East Asian countries. It is hoped that this synergy will expedite the application of available ideas and technology in the one, to compliment the other in a globalized world.
Today, the Asian economies like China,Korea and India are gradually displacing former projections in economy, science and arts, culture and super-power technologies. This day ,the fulcrum of Asian economic power is in China and Korea. China’s socialist market economy is the world’s largest economy in nominal GDP. It is also the world largest economy by purchasing power parity according to IMF, and the largest exporter of goods in the world. It is equally the largest growing consumer market and importer of goods globally. Given the above statistics, it can be said that the establishment of the Bassey Andah Institute for African and Asian Studies at the University of Calabar is quite timely in view of prevailing global economic and cultural realities which places much demand on innovative and strategic approach to teething problems.
The pro-active strategy for cross-cultural exchanges within the institute offers prospective students a wide range of options to explore. These options provide a flexible atmosphere for all classes of students to appreciate the exciting cultures and artistic heritage of Africa and Asia in an integrated form.
